De thuiswedstrijd van LACO Eaters Geleen tegen Bulldogs Luik van 6 november zal in het teken staan van het goede doel. Een groot deel van de opbrengsten van de Knauf Wounded Warrior Charity Game, inclusief een veiling van de shirts, gaat naar Wounded Warriors, een stichting die veteranen ondersteunt. De opbrengst wordt verdeeld onder de Nederlandse en de Amerikaanse tak van Wounded Warriors, en het Canadese Soldier On, een stichting met hetzelfde doel. Om dit mogelijk te maken zal de firma Knauf eenmalig als extra sponsor op het Eatersshirt prijken.

Het wordt de tweede keer dat de Eaters een wedstrijd spelen voor deze stichting. Aan het einde van het vorige seizoen regelde Eater Brad Westerman, die zelf voor het Canadese leger werkt als politieagent, samen met voormalig beroepsmilitair en huidig Reservist Dave Sullot een benefietwedstrijd tussen het Geleense team en het recreatieteam GK Flyers. Deze wedstrijd eindigde in 12-12, zoals het een benefietwedstrijd betaamt. Dit jaar gaat Eaters geld ophalen tijdens een competitiewedstrijd.

“Voor mij is het belangrijk dat zowel fysieke als mentale beperkingen, die het gevolg zijn van het dienen van je land, bespreekbaar gemaakt worden”, aldus Westerman. “Het maakt niet uit waar je vandaan komt, de vrijheid die wij hebben is bereikt met enige mate van verlies. Dan spreken we doorgaans over de gesneuvelden, maar we vergeten degenen die ledematen verloren, of blind of doof zijn geworden. Ook PTSS (post-traumatische stress stoornis) is een serieus probleem. Dagelijks plegen in de VS 22 leden van het leger zelfmoord. In Canada hebben 160 Afghanistan-veteranen tussen 2004 en 2014 zelfmoord gepleegd. Dat zijn schokkende cijfers. Daarom vind ik het mooi dat we met organisaties uit drie landen die verbonden zijn in de strijd voor vrijheid aandacht kunnen vragen hiervoor.” Behalve aandacht hoopt Westerman een mooi bedrag op te halen voor het goede doel: “een deel van de recette gaat naar het goede doel en ook de speciale shirts worden aan het eind van de wedstrijd verkocht. Dat bedrag gaat volledig naar het goede doel.”

Westerman zal tijdens de Knauf Wounded Warriors Charity Game niet met zijn vertrouwde nummer 41 spelen, maar met 73. “Dat klopt,” aldus Westerman. “Tijdens mijn uitzending naar Afghanistan reed ik altijd met een bepaald legervoertuig. Op 3 juli (in de Noord-Amerikaanse notatie geschreven als 7-3) reed dit voertuig op een geïmproviseerde bom, wat resulteerde in één dode en meerder zwaargewonden. Ik zou normaal gesproken in het voertuig gezeten hebben, maar mijn baas had mij een dag vrij gegeven. Anders denk ik niet dat ik nu nog ijshockey had kunnen spelen. Om die datum te eren zal ik dus eenmalig met rugnummer 73 spelen.”

De wedstrijd tussen Eaters Geleen en Bulldogs Luik vindt plaats in LACO Glanerbrook Geleen, op 6 november. De openingsface-off is om 19 uur.

On November 6, the home game of LACO Eaters Geleen against Bulldogs Liège will be all about charity. A large part of the proceeds of the Knauf Wounded Warrior Charity Game, including a sale of the game worn jerseys, will go to the Dutch and American chapters of Wounded Warriors, and the Canadian Soldier On. Both charities support veterans. In order to make this special event happen, the company Knauf will be added to the Eaters jersey as a sponsor for this particlar game.

It will be the second time that Eaters will have a game dedicated to these charities. At the end of last season, Eaters player Brad Westerman and former member of the Dutch army Dave Sullot organized a friendly game between the Eaters and the recreational team GK Flyers. As should be expected of a charity match, the game ended in a 12-12 tie. This year Eaters raises the bar by hosting the charity event during a regular season game.

Brad Westerman, who works for the Canadian army as a police man, said about this event: “I feel it is important to get people talking about physical disabilities caused by service to their country, as well as operational stress injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how they can effect members of our Military. No matter where we come from the freedom we enjoy was not achieved without a degree of loss, and the numbers we often discuss are the amount of our dead. Often the ones forgotten have lost limbs, the ability to see or hear. There is also a serious issue with PTSD and insuring service members who may be suffering have the ability to seek help.

Every day in the USA there is an average of 22 military members who commit suicide. In Canada we have over 160 members that fought in Afghanistan and that have committed suicide between 2004 & 2014. Those numbers are staggering. What better way than for three countries tied together by war, liberation, and still fight side by side around the world to try and raise awareness. The Netherlands has lost 25 soldiers in Afghanistan, and more recently 2 Dutch Peacekeepers were killed in Mali last July.

Secondly we hope to raise a little money for the charities. We have some sponsors that have offered to chip in towards the cause. There will also be a portion of the ticket sales going to the charity. Finally all the Jerseys the players wear have been specially made and will be auctioned off after the game. 100% of this money raised will go straight to the charity as well”, according to Westerman.

Westerman will not wear his normal number 41 for the Knauf Wounded Warriors Charity Game, but 73. “That’s correct”, Westerman confirmed. “The #73 represents July 3rd. In 2009 on this day during a routine patrol in Zhari Province just outside Kandahar the armoured vehicle team that I patrolled with struck an improvised explosive device. Our armoured vehicle team suffered one casualty and multiple serious injuries. Although normally I would have been in that vehicle, on that day my boss gave me the day off, which saved me from guaranteed serious injury. Maybe an injury that could have limited my ability to play hockey at the level we are playing here in Limburg.

It’s easy to say that everything happens for a reason, but it is not always easy knowing that someone else was seriously injured standing in the spot I was always in and should have been in on that day. Losing a close teammate and watching four more guys leave after suffering severe injuries bonded the team forever. We also had one of our men take his own life a couple years after our return. So for this one night I will wear the #73 to honour them, and anyone else who has experienced a loss or Operational Stress Injury of any kind.

The Knauf Wounded Warriors Charity Game between LACO Eaters Geleen and Bulldogs Liège will be played at LACO Glanerbrook in Geleen, on November 6. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
