Zij volgen daarmee Peter Knops op die enige tijd terug uit deze functie stapte maar als bestuurslid Technische Zaken nog steeds nadrukkelijk aan de club verbonden is.

Het Geleense top-ijshockeyteam Snackpoint Eaters Limburg heeft een nieuw Teammanagersduo aangetrokken. De ene helft van het duo is Zvonko Gibbels.
Gibbels (60) is een geboren en getogen Geleendenaar en een Eater in hart en nieren. Toen de club in 1968 werd opgericht , was de jonge Zvonko al van de partij. Toen de Tsjechische goalie Vaclav Sochor een jaar later vanuit Tsjechië de Geleense gelederen kwam versterken en ook bij trainingen betrokken raakte, stelde hij voor dat Zvonko in de goal ging staan.
Volgens eigen zeggen is hij daar nooit meer weggegaan.

Gibbels doorliep vanaf de E-jeugd alle juniorploegen van Smoke Eaters en debuteerde op zijn veertiende in het eerste team. Vanaf zijn 16e was hij een vaste waarde in dit team en speelde voor de nationale jeugdploeg twee EK’s en een WK (1979/1981). Acht seizoenen lang prijkte hij op de Eaters-wedstrijdsheets. Toen hij eindexamen moest doen in 1986, stopte hij. Drie jaar lang bleven zijn goalieschaatsen in de tas en richtte hij zich op het opbouwen van een maatschappelijke carrière. Totdat Den Bosch hem benaderde. Alle twee hun goalies waren geblesseerd geraakt en hij was de enige speelgerechtigde doelverdediger in Nederland die beschikbaar was. Zvonko stemde toe en ongetraind stapte hij het ijs op… tegen Smoke Eaters: “We verloren met 1-15 maar ik had een geweldige avond. Het voelde zo goed om weer op het ijs te staan.”
Gibbels speelde in totaal nog vier seizoenen voor de Red Eagles maar stopte toen definitief. Toen zijn stiefzoon ging ijshockeyen en Zvonko op de tribune zat, zag hij een talentvolle goalie in het team van zijn zoon: Rowan Delil. “Ik raakte aan de praat met de andere ouders die ook op de tribune zaten. Ik zag potentie in hun zoon en bood begeleiding aan,” aldus Zvonko. Zo ontdekte hij eigenlijk een kant van zichzelf die hij nog niet kende. “Het was een spontaan gebaar maar ik wist eigenlijk helemaal niet of ik het geduld daarvoor had. Het lukte echter wonderwel.”
Zo raakte Gibbels ook betrokken bij het eerste team: “Andy Tenbult was toen de coach en hij vroeg mij om eens met de toenmalige goalie Björn Steijlen te gaan praten. Björn was door de coach uit het doel gehaald en de jonge Belg baalde daar behoorlijk van. “Zo erg dat hij de kont tegen de krib dreigde te gooien,” legt Zvonko uit. “Ik ben toen met hem gaan praten, als goalie tot goalie. Dat heeft gewerkt. Zo ben ik als goalie-coach aan de slag gegaan. Kijk, ik hoef die mannen niet uit te leggen dat ze pucks moeten tegenhouden, dat weten ze wel. Maar het mentale gedeelte, dat is bij hen zeer belangrijk. Het blijven natuurlijk aparte figuren die een speciale behandeling nodig hebben.”
Nu gaat Zvonko dus aan de slag als teammanager. Heeft hij daar lang over moeten nadenken? “Nee, eigenlijk niet,” reageert hij. “Ik heb geen ervaring als TM. Wat het werk inhoudt is even afhankelijk van wat er voor met name nieuwe spelers geregeld moet worden. Coach Jeffery van Iersel is al een tijdje bezig met de nieuwe spelersgroep. Ik word daarin gekend omdat ik veel spelers ken maar ik heb geen beslissende zeggenschap in wie er komt en wie niet.”
Verder weet hij uit ervaring dat een TM regelmatig in een spagaat zit. Hij zit tussen spelers en bestuur in en kan dus in die zin van beide kanten als pispaaltje worden gebruikt. Maar wie Zvonko een beetje kent, weet dat hij daar wel mee om kan gaan. “Ik hou van eerlijkheid,” legt hij uit. “Integriteit en loyaliteit heb ik hoog in het vaandel staan. Afspraak is afspraak. Wie zich daar niet aan houdt, heeft aan mij een kwaaie.”
Over Jeffery van Iersel gesproken: die kent Zvonko uit diens speeltijd bij Eaters omdat hij toen al goalie-coach was. “Ik was blij om te horen dat Jeffrey de nieuwe coach werd. Hij is een nuchter, no-nonsens persoon die – net als ik – van heldere afspraken houdt. Wat hij bij zijn vorige clubs heeft gepresteerd, spreekt voor zich. Ik zie het komende seizoen met hem aan het roer dan ook met belangstelling en vertrouwen tegemoet.”

Het top-ijshockeyteam Snackpoint Eaters Limburg heeft een nieuw Teammanagersduo aangetrokken. Naast Zvonko Gibbels, is ook Lars Engwegen toegetreden tot de staf van de Geleense club.
Lars was vijf jaar oud toen hij in 1996 bij Rob’s Sportshop een paar skeelers ging kopen.
Hij werd aangesproken door Hans Baggen (voormalig goalie van de Geleense ijshockeyclub). Of hij geen zin had om eens te komen ijshockeyen. Lars stemde toe en is nooit meer weggegaan. .

Eerst in de schaatsklas bij Al Raymond, toen bij de Mini’s waar Peter Knops coach was. Zijn teamgenoten waren o.a. Lars van Sloun, Brian Mens, Dean Moors, en Thierry Knops. Wat weet hij zich nog te herinneren van zijn jaren bij de Smoke Eaters-jeugd? “Met de Welpen werden we kampioen,” begint Lars. “Met het D-team verloren we de finale tegen Tilburg. Wat me ook altijd zal bijblijven waren de dubbele weekenden. Met uitrusting aan in de auto naar een uitwedstrijd van de D-tjes met Harry Loos als coach en daarna weer met de uitrusting aan terug naar Geleen voor de thuiswedstrijd met het C-team. Ik wilde geen seconde ijstijd missen.”
Met die instelling debuteerde Lars in 2008 bij het eerste team van Ruijters Eaters dat onder leiding stond van Uli Egen. Het daarop volgende seizoen won hij met Mike Pellegrims als coach de Beker van Nederland en twee seizoenen daarna werd hij zelfs Kampioen van Nederland met Chris Eimers aan het roer. “Wat een ongelofelijk seizoen was dat,” blikt Engwegen terug. “Alles klopte dat jaar, behalve de halve finale om de Beker die we verloren van Tilburg. Verder echt een topseizoen. En dat ik daar als Geleense speler volwaardig in de ploeg meedraaide, was gewoon schitterend. Dat neemt niemand me meer af.”
In de jaren daarna bleef sportief succes voor hem uit, ondanks een gewonnen Ron Berteling-schaal en de Larry van Wieren-cup. Na een uitstapje van twee seizoenen bij Luik (waar hij ook een keer de Beker wist te winnen) keerde Lars weer terug aan de Kummenaedestraat. Afgelopen seizoen waren er goede verwachtingen maar door diverse oorzaken, waar corona de belangrijkste van was, was er van een geslaagd jaar geen sprake. Voor Lars persoonlijk al helemaal niet. Hij moest gedwongen door een heupblessure, waar niets meer aan te doen was, vroegtijdig de schaatsen aan de wilgen hangen.
Lars “Ik heb laatst nog een onderzoek in het ziekenhuis gehad, waarbij een zgn. infiltratie is uitgevoerd. Helaas bleek dat er niets meer aan te doen was. Het risico was gewoon te groot. Maar ik wil niet weg uit die ijshal…” En toen was daar de vraag van het bestuur of hij samen met Zvonko Gibbels het Teammanagement wilde verzorgen. Kwam die als geroepen? Lars: “Ja. Ik moet toch wat. Ik wil bij het ijshockey betrokken blijven. En als ik niet óp het ijs mijn bijdrage aan succes kan leveren, dan op deze manier. Ik denk ook dat dat goed mogelijk is. Vanuit mijn werk als intermediair ben ik gewend om als tussenpersoon op te treden, om wensen en behoeftes op elkaar af te stemmen en te finetunen. Ik heb altijd een grote bek gehad over wat er allemaal niet klopte en beter moest en daar kan ik nu daadwerkelijk mee aan de slag.”
Waar denkt hij dan specifiek aan? Wat moet er beter? Wat is zijn plan? Engwegen: “Ik wil me bezig houden met persoonlijke begeleiding en het sportklimaat, iets wat door de jaren heen toch steeds minder is geworden. Ik was samen met Lars van Sloun al de vertaler naar het bestuur van wat er in de spelersgroep leefde. Ik denk dat er van daaruit al van beide partijen voldoende respect naar mij is, zodat ik daar nu resultaat mee kan boeken.”

Het Geleense top-ijshockeyteam Snackpoint Eaters Limburg heeft een nieuw Teammanagersduo aangetrokken in de personen van Zvonko Gibbels (60) en Lars Engwegen (31).
Zij volgen daarmee Peter Knops op die enige tijd terug uit deze functie stapte maar als bestuurslid Technische Zaken nog steeds nadrukkelijk aan de club verbonden is.

“Het belang van een goede teammanager is cruciaal, daarom ook de hoge prioriteit binnen onze organisatie. Teammanager zijn is zeker niet voor iedereen weggelegd! Een goede teammanager is de intermediair tussen bestuur (Technische Zken) en het team. Belangrijk is het vinden van de juiste balans. Een goede teammanager moet management skills hebben, verstand hebben van het spelletje, overwicht hebben, een duizendpoot zijn en een luisterend oor hebben.”
“De verantwoordelijkheid van een team manager is feitelijk alles wat zich buiten het ijs afspeelt; aanspreek- en contactpersoon, het regelen van het transport, materiaal, contracten, werk- en verblijfsvergunningen regelen en contacten onderhouden met (import)spelers, organiseren van huisvesting en op de hoogte zijn van laatste ontwikkelingen. Zo kan ik nog wel een tijdje doorgaan.”
“Belangrijk is en blijft echter het belang van de organisatie nooit uit het oog verliezen en dit proberen over te brengen van en naar het team. En zeker niet altijd het vriendje willen en kunnen zijn van eenieder in het belang van de organisatie. Want niets en niemand is belangrijker dan het ijshockey zelf. Ik ben daarom ook van mening dat wij de juiste mensen in de combinatiefunctie met Zvonko Gibbels en Lars Engwegen hebben gevonden. Beiden lopen al jaren mee binnen onze organisatie in verschillende functies en kunnen zich zo duidelijk verplaatsen in de juiste rol.”
